On Wednesday, Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson put together one of the most productive offensive days you’ll ever see in MLB. By the time the dust settled, he had completely rewritten his season stat line. Swanson entered the day with 35 RBI through 74 games. He finished it with 46 RBI through 76 games. That’s right, he had 11 RBI in a single day. It’s even crazier when you consider that entering the day, Swanson was batting just .189 on the year. 11 RBIs are insane, but it gets even more incredible because he had a big night on Tuesday as well, making the past 48 hours historic.

The Cubs and Mets played a doubleheader on Wednesday, and Swanson was at the center of nearly everything Chicago did offensively. In Game 1, the Cubs rolled to a 10-3 victory, with Swanson delivering a performance that would have been enough to headline the entire day by itself. The veteran shortstop crushed two home runs and drove in seven runs, accounting for the majority of Chicago’s offense.

Most players would gladly take a seven-RBI game and call it a day. Swanson wasn’t finished. Just a few hours later, he was back on the field for Game 2 and continued tormenting Mets pitching. The Cubs completed the sweep with a 10-5 victory, and Swanson added three more hits and four more RBI to his incredible stat line.

A Wild 48 Hours

As remarkable as Wednesday was, it’s actually the past 48 hours that have been wild for Dansby. Swanson had a big game during Tuesday night’s 9-6 Cubs victory when he drove in four runs against New York. That means over the last 48 hours, Swanson has collected 15 RBI. To put that in perspective, he entered Tuesday with 31 RBI on the season. In just two games and one doubleheader, he nearly increased that total by 50 percent.

Carrying the Cubs Offense

Baseball is a sport where even the best hitters can go weeks without producing numbers like these. That’s what makes Swanson’s run so extraordinary. An 11-RBI day is rare enough. Pairing it with four RBI the night before makes it almost impossible to believe.

What Swanson accomplished this week is the kind of offensive explosion that fans will remember for years, and one that may not be duplicated anytime soon.
