Portugal’s quest to end Cristiano Ronaldo’s search for a World Cup crown begins anew on Wednesday when it faces off against DR Congo at Houston’s NRG Stadium. Ronaldo will be making his sixth appearance at a World Cup finals and ties level with Lionel Messi as he makes yet another piece of history before the action has even kicked off.
Roberto Martinez’s side are the overwhelming favorites to top Group K but take on a tenacious DR Congo side, which emerged triumphant in the second round of CAF qualifying after beating Nigeria on penalties. The Leopards will be playing their first game at a World Cup finals in more than half a century, having last competed in the competition way back in 1974.
Ronaldo, 41, is expected to lead Portugal’s attack and will earn his 229th cap provided that is the case, having scored 143 goals in that time to date. To put those figures into context, DR Congo’s entire squad at present boasts a combined 82 goals, with striker Cedric Bakambu its top scorer with 21 international goals under his belt.
Sebastien Desabre’s side is dotted with Premier League talents, including Newcastle forward Yoane Wissa, Sunderland playmaker Noah Sadiki and West Ham full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka. However, Ronaldo & Co will fancy themselves to get the job done, boasting a depth of riches in midfield and attack in particular that put them on par with just about anyone in the world.
