Cristiano Ronaldo led Portugal onto the World Cup stage again for its 2026 opener against Congo DR, back in the starting lineup 20 years after making his World Cup debut.
The 41-year-old Ronaldo joined Argentina's Lionel Messi this year as the only players to appear in six World Cups and he's the oldest non-goalie to start in a World Cup game. But this tournament is the main prize that has eluded Ronaldo during a legendary career spanning more than 1,000 professional goals. His best finish was fourth place during his World Cup debut in 2006.
But Ronaldo has nonetheless found the back of the net in more than one-third of his World Cup appearances. Here's a breakdown of Ronaldo's World Cup goals:

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored eight goals over the course of six World Cups and 23 total appearances for Portugal. His most prolific World Cup was 2018 when he had a memorable hat trick against Spain and scored another goal in a win over Morocco during the team's run to the Round of 16 with Portugal. He also has two assists in World Cup games.
João Neves scored Portugal's first goal of its first 2026 World Cup match against Congo DR on June 17.
