The offseason is in full swing and the Dallas Cowboys are in the process of determining what they want to do with many of their free agents. The team has already re-signed running back Javonte Williams and franchise tagged wide receiver George Pickens, and it appears they have made another decision on a key role player.

According to one report, the Cowboys are not planning to tender interior offensive lineman Brock Hoffman.

Sources: #Cowboys are not planning to tender C/G Brock Hoffman as an RFA, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Hoffman started 14 games over the last two years, proving to be a valuable depth piece at C, LG and RG. Just 26 years old, he should have some real interest. pic.twitter.com/mvZwTqfnUq

The versatile backup OL is a restricted free agent who the team could have tendered with a right to match any deal, but the Cowboys declined to go down that path with Hoffman. This news comes on the heels of reports last week that the team is likely to use a second-round tender on another important backup, T.J. Bass.

It’s a somewhat surprising move by the Cowboys, who counted on Hoffman as a valuable backup behind Cooper Beebe at center. Hoffman has started in 16 games during his four-year career at center but can also play either guard spot. The 26-year-old has played well when the Cowboys needed him and brought toughness to the OL.

The move is difficult to understand when the Cowboys could’ve kept him for relatively cheap. Last season the team kept Hoffman as an exclusive right free agent in early March, showing how much they thought of his value and the physicality he brought.

Dallas can still re-sign Hoffman, but they do risk losing him when free agency opens next week. In a league that’s short on quality offensive linemen, Hoffman is likely to find a team quickly.

The Cowboys may want to gauge what Hoffman is worth and try to keep him, but they may also covet the compensatory pick he could bring in return for signing a significant deal with another team.

Hoffman was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Cleveland Browns, but the Cowboys signed him to their practice squad in 2022, and he’s appeared in 54 games for the team. Since being signed by the Cowboys, Hoffman has been a valuable backup, and the team will miss not being able to lean on him if an injury should occur on the interior of the offensive line.

It’s a gamble the Cowboys appear willing to take.
