I've only seen a few of the episodes on Cartoon Network (which I dug). Do you have to know the backstory pretty well to appreciate the movie?

Just know a little bit about each character on the ship.

The main thing to understand is that the dog that is on the ship was this experimental dog that is super smart. However, Spike and his pals have no idea that the dog is anything other than a normal dog.

So when it does odd things...that is why.
