GRAY, Tenn. (WJHL) — As we countdown to kickoff, we turn the spotlight on the Daniel Boone Trailblazers who are hoping a productive offseason will help accelerate the next step in the program’s rebuild.

Daniel Boone finished 1-9 last season, but its lone victory over Cocke County ended a 19-game losing streak. Four years removed from a 12-1 campaign and a trip to the Class 5A state quarterfinals, head coach Jeremy Jenkins believes the foundation is beginning to take shape.

The Trailblazers return All-Conference running back Dru Fleming and expect junior quarterback Mykah Lucas to take over as the full-time starter after an early injury limited him last season. Jenkins also highlighted experienced offensive linemen Hunter Gallo, Dayton Myers and Tristan Kirkland as key pieces entering the fall.

Jenkins said the team’s offseason focus has been on getting stronger and healthier, with the ultimate goal of competing for a home playoff game.

“We’ve had a really good offseason. We kind of revamped some things. The kids have really worked hard, gotten a lot stronger. We’re hoping that’s really paid off for us. The big thing for us will be staying healthy,” Jenkins said. ” Our goal is to host a playoff game. That’s always been our goal going in. We want our best football to be playing in November and hopefully playing one right here in Nathan Hale.”

Fleming said he has already noticed growth throughout the roster and believes the Trailblazers are capable of returning to the postseason.

“You definitely see an improvement from last year,” Fleming said. “We have a pretty good shot at making the playoffs this year, and that’s one of our main goals. Obviously, the goal every year is to win the conference, but I think everybody’s pretty set on getting to that goal”

Daniel Boone opens the 2026 season at home against Volunteer on Aug. 21.
