The New York Giants will continue to round out their coaching staff after being spurned by Todd Monken, who they had hoped to bring in as their new offensive coordinator. He took the head coaching job with the Cleveland Browns, widely considered the least attractive on the market, rather than reunite with John Harbaugh in New York.

The Giants are still in the market for a new offensive coordinator, and the pickings are getting slimmer by the hour. That doesn't mean they still can't land a good one.

One name that keeps popping up is Charlie Weis Jr., Lane Kiffin's offensive coordinator down at LSU. Weis moved to Baton Rouge with Kiffin this offseason after four seasons at Ole Miss.

For those connecting the dots, yes, he was Jaxson Dart's offensive coordinator in college. But convincing Weis to leave his cushy college gig to join the NFL rat race might take some doing. Perhaps Dart can sway him.

"I loved playing with Charlie," Dart told Big Blue View's Ed Valentine in an exclusive interview. "Made tremendous strides as a player each year playing under him. Obviously, just have a great relationship with him, his dad [Charlie Weis Sr.], his wife Jen. They’re a great family, and I couldn’t say anything bad about Charlie.

"He's a great coach. He’s a bright young mind in this game, and he’s going to have a long career and is going to win a lot of championships. Whatever level that is, I have all the respect in the world for him."

USA TODAY's Art Stapleton reports that the Giants reached out to the 32-year-old Weis to gauge his interest this week.

Where does Weis Jr. fit in? The Giants reached out and were in contact with the current LSU offensive coordinator on Wednesday as they weigh their options and set up interviews, a source told NorthJersey.com and The Record. Whether Weis Jr. can emerge as a front runner or even a viable candidate, given the fact that he recently pulled his name from consideration for the Philadelphia Eagles' OC job, remains uncertain as the Giants take this next step in the search as discreetly as possible.

It's believed that, if the Giants were to make an offer, Weis Jr. would seriously consider it, and how could he not with the chance to coach Dart again on a potential Hall of Fame coach's staff and for the team where his father once coached.

The Giants are ready to do whatever it takes to support Dart in his trajectory to stardom. Landing Weis would appear to be a big step in that direction, but he seems determined to remain at LSU.

On Charlie Weis Jr. as the Giants OC: Jaxson Dart pushed for him. Showed support for his guy, per sources. Things can change but expectations as of now are that Weis Jr. plans to remain in college at LSU.#Giants#LSU#OleMiss

But as former Giants general manager Jerry Reese would recite, "never say never."
