The Dallas Cowboys just can't get things right. Ever since they were somehow able to land future Hall of Famer Jason Witten in the third round of the before times, 2003, the front office has continuously whiffed whenever they invest major draft capital in the position. 2006 second round: Anthony Fasano. 2008 second round: Martellus Bennett. 2013 second round: Gavin Escobar. Those busts scarred the team, causing them to just give up on finding the a high-pedigree running mate to Witten.

Even after Witten retired following 2017, and returned for one season in 2019, the team still refused to invest a Day 1 or Day 2 pick at the position. They instead used fourth rounders to some success, first with Dalton Schultz in 2018 and then with Jake Ferguson in 2022. In 2023 though, they rolled the dice, using a second-round pick to select Michigan's Luke Schoonmaker. The results were more of the same.

Schoonmaker has made no impact in his three seasons with the club, catching just 49 passes for 438 yards. He hasn't scored a touchdown since 2024 and has just three on his career despite playing in all 17 games each of his three seasons. In fact, he's been passed on the depth chart by 2023 UDFA Brevyn Spann-Ford. Now he enters the final season of his rookie contract with one last training camp to impress the coaching staff enough to earn more snaps.
