Robert Rodriguez to Helm Conan
Source: TheArnoldFans.com
April 30, 2005

TheArnoldFans.com is reporting they have confirmed an earlier report that Sin City director Robert Rodriguez has been tapped by Warner Bros. Pictures to helm a new version of Conan. The studio is no longer going with Conan the Barbarian director John Milius for the project. Milius was developing a film titled King Conan: Crown of Iron.

The site adds that if Rodriguez can get Arnold Schwarzenegger to star in the film, the project would still be "King Conan" but would have a new script. If Schwarzenegger is not available, you can expect an all new Conan.

Normally I'd agree with you, but in this case it's right on.

If Arnold does it, the King Conan (older Conan) plotline makes perfect sense. If he decides to pass, Rodriguez could bring in anyone he wants and start the story wherever he wants, rather than pick up from the first two films with Arnold.

Hmm, this could be good or bad. Not having the original director and/or Arnold, it would be very difficult to pull off. Still, Rodriguez is a damn good director. We'll just have to see. At least it's not a remake of Conan...Conan the Barbarian had a ton of plotlines to work with.

Lionsgate Boards New Conan Film
Source: Lionsgate
January 11, 2008

Nu Image/Millennium Films and Lionsgate have announced a deal for Lionsgate to acquire North American distribution rights to the highly coveted film series Conan the Barbarian, based on Robert E. Howard's mythical conquering hero. The companies most recently partnered on Rambo, which Lionsgate is co-releasing (with The Weinstein Company) on January 25th. The announcement was jointly made by Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short and Avi Lerner, founders of Nu Image/Millennium Films, and Jason Constantine, Lionsgate Executive Vice President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions.

Nu Image/Millennium's Boaz Davidson and Joe Gatta are producing the film, along with Fredrick Malmberg of Paradox Entertainment, George Furla and Henry Winterstern. Executive producers include Nu Image's Dimbort, Short and Lerner. Production is slated to take place in Bulgaria in summer/fall 2008.

"We could not be happier to be back in business with Lionsgate," said Dimbort. "They have done a phenomenal job with 'Rambo' and know how to release a high-profile property. 'Conan' is an amazing franchise and they will treat it in kind."

"We are delighted to join Nu Image/Millennium Films in bringing 'Conan the Barbarian' back to the big screen," said Constantine. "This is a character unlike any other in the action/adventure canon, with an unlimited potential for stories that are exciting and different. And given the production expertise and creativity of our friends at Nu Image/Millennium, this 'Conan' is sure to conquer."

Commented Lerner, "Lionsgate was our choice from the beginning. Jon Feltheimer has a great crew with good instincts, a fantastic understanding of distribution and a wonderful marketing machine. They will give these films the right attention and make them a huge success."

Here's an old clipping from when Millennium got the film rights:

Malmberg and Millennium will start over, since WB owns those other scripts and execs there weren't happy that Malmberg took Conan elsewhere. The new version will be more faithful to Howard's original creation than were the Schwarzenegger films.

I'm stoked that the new one will be more true to the stories, but bummed that they've lost Milius. Also, I do not think the Rock would be right for the role.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brett Ratner is in final negotiations to direct Conan, which is aiming for a release in early 2010.

The trade says that Ratner jived to the Conan script by Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly, who looked to Robert E. Howard's original pulp stories of the 1930s to create their take on the character. The writers are doing a quick polish to incorporate some of Ratner's ideas.

Joe Gatta and Avi Lerner of Millennium Films are producing, along with Paradox Entertainment president and CEO Fredrik Malmberg.

Millennium and Lionsgate are eyeing a potential franchise and envision a very R-rated approach in the $85 million budget range. Preproduction is under way for a shoot at Nu Image's Nu Boyana Studio in Bulgaria.

"The story opens on the battlefield where Conan is born and tells the origin story that sets the stage for what will be the first of multiple films," Lerner said.

Yeah, but who is going to actually play Conan?

it doesn't matter if Ratner's directing because it will be complete and utter crap with him behind the camera.

Empire magazine spoke to Conan and Red Sonja producer Joe Gatta, who said that Brett Ratner is not attached to direct the former anymore:

"We're currently in the process of hiring a director," he told us. "For the past six months we were discussing the movie with Brett Ratner, and for more timing issues than anything else we had to part ways with Brett. We all wanted him to do it, believe me; just the timing didn't work. But you never know what can happen."

Gatta added that they are hoping to start production on Conan on August 24 in Bulgaria, while Red Sonja would start sometime next year.

I like how the poster is an homage to Frazetta's iconic Conan cover. They wussed out by excluding the woman in the image though.
