Allen Park and Gibraltar Carlson have been the cream of the crop in Division 2, with the two programs combining to win each of the last 19 state titles.

The Downriver League rivals went toe-to-toe yet again, with Allen Park claiming its third straight competitive cheer title Saturday evening at Central Michigan University’s McGuirk Arena.

The team posted the best scores in over the first two rounds before holding off a final-round rally from Gibraltar Carlson. As the dust settled, the rivals were separated by just tenths of a point with Allen Park coming out on top 790.40-790.08.

Allen Park has won seven of the last 10 state titles, moving the program’s total to eight, the second most in Division 2.

It’s the second consecutive runner-up finish for Gibraltar Carlson, with its 321.8 final-round score falling just short.

The Metro Detroit area was well represented in the top half of the standings, as Carleton Airport finished third followed by Walled Lake Western in fourth.

Division 3​


Pontiac Notre Dame Prep also defended its state title earlier in the day, narrowly winning all three rounds to secure the program’s second consecutive Division 3 championship.

The team rode momentum from districts and regionals to the title, posting its best result of the season at 787.84 for its fourth straight team score above 782 points.

It was a steady performance all afternoon, with Notre Dame Prep building a five-point lead through the first two rounds. With the pressure of the final performance in round three, the team stayed solid with a 320.0.

The win gives coach Jocelyn Welsh two titles in her first three seasons, and the program its seventh overall. It won five straight from 2014-2018.

Armada finished runner-up, the best finish in its history behind a strong third performance. The team’s 318.8 in round three was second only to Notre Dame Prep, propelling Armada from fourth to second with a 779.04.

Grosse Ile took third with a 777.5 team score, followed by Richmond in fourth.
