Neenah, Notre Dame fall in Division 1 team tennis quarterfinals

MADISON – Neenah and Notre Dame Academy both lost in the Division 1 quarterfinals at the WIAA state team tennis tournament Friday, June 12, at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Marquette University defeated Neenah 4-3. Hunter Brown won at No. 1 singles and Nicholas Zenzick won at No. 4 singles for Neenah. Brady Lawatsch and Luke Grassl won at No. 1 doubles for the Rockets.

Neenah finishes the season with a 14-7 record.

Middleton defeated Notre Dame Academy 5-2. Notre Dame got its two victories from Alex Thomas at No. 1 singles and Augustine Luy at No. 2 singles.

Notre Dame finishes the season with a 12-12 record.


In the other quarterfinal matches, Badger defeated Franklin 5-2 and Whitefish Bay blanked Hudson 7-0.

Whitefish Bay will play Marquette in one semifinal match at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 13, while Middleton will play Badger in the other semifinal.

Fifth-seeded Neenah was making its 12th state appearance in the last 13 seasons – not counting the canceled season in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic – and its 23rd overall, which ranks second-most in the membership.

The Rockets won five straight championships from 1991 to 1995 and have won 10 titles overall, also earning the crown in 1946, 1951, 1953, 1957 and 1965.

In addition, the Rockets have 12 runner-up finishes, including 1935, 1940, 1950, 1952, 1971, 1996, 2001, 2005, 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2022.

Marquette was the fourth seed in the bracket. The Hilltoppers are making their 19th straight appearance, excluding the canceled season of 2020, and their 22nd overall. They have won the team championship in 13 of the last 18 state tournaments and have won 15 titles overall.

The years they earned state team titles include 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2023, as well as runner-up finishes in 2004, 2021 and 2024.

Seventh-seeded Notre Dame returned to the Division 1 field this season to make its 13th state appearance. The Tritons also qualified in Division 1 in 2022 and 2023 before returning to Division 2 in their most recent appearance in 2024.

Notre Dame captured the gold trophy in two of its 10 tourney trips in Division 2, including 2012 and 2019. In addition, it finished runner-up in Division 2 five times, including 2005, 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2024.
