The 2025 NFL draft is just over a week away, and teams are scrambling to finish evaluations and finalize draft boards before everyone meets up in Green Bay next Thursday. The Washington Commanders are no different, although they have less work to do than most NFL teams. As they finish their processes, it's still difficult to pinpoint what direction they will take with the 29th pick.
Pro Football Focus recently released a list of surprise picks each team could go for in the first round, something different than what other mock drafts have suggested. Considering we've seen the Commanders predicted to select tight ends, edge rushers, running backs, tackles, defensive linemen, cornerbacks, and safeties, coming up with a surprise probably wasn't easy. But they found one, and it wouldn't be a bad surprise.
Higgins started his collegiate career at Eastern Kentucky before transferring to Iowa State. As a senior, he recorded 87 receptions (ranked 10th in the FBS) for 1,183 yards and nine touchdowns. He has the size and wingspan to be a menace, but he's not going to be a superstar. He can get the job done with the skills he has and his size, especially in jump-ball scenarios, but he's not going to outrun cornerbacks or get a lot of yards after the catch.
The Commanders can use a reliable young receiver who can stretch defenses more than what Deebo Samuel and Terry McLaurin are already going to do. Is Higgins that guy? It's hard to say, but he will land somewhere and have a moderately successful career.

29. Washington Commanders: WR Jayden HigginsAdding another weapon like Jayden Higgins — who earned a perfect 99.9 intermediate receiving grade last season — would give Jayden Daniels the ability to consistently attack all three levels of the defense. Terry McLaurin could continue stretching the field as a deep threat, while Deebo Samuel thrives underneath with yards after the catch. Higgins’ ability to win in isolation would bring yet another dynamic element to an already dangerous offense.
