Washington Commanders first round rookie tackle Josh Conerly Jr. wasn't seen as the top tackle in the 2025 draft. To some analysts, he was seen as a reach of sorts from where he was selected.
The organization doesn't care about that, though. They knew they needed an offensive lineman to come in and help bolster the group to protect franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels.
And Conerly was one of the best players available at the positon when the team made their pick with the 29th overall selection.
Not everyone was critical of the move, though. The Athletic insider Ben Standig called Conerly Jr. as his favorite pick for the Commanders last week.
"Anyone looking to upgrade their home for a future sale knows that renovating the kitchen provides the greatest return on investment," Standig wrote. "The same goes for the offensive line. You can have the best skill players, but those talents won’t shine bright without quality blockers.
"The Commanders overhauled the line in the past two years and went next-level with the trade for Laremy Tunsil and selecting Conerly in Round 1. We can’t say Washington has one of the league’s best tackle tandems quite yet, but the potential is there. Jayden Daniels can’t wait."
Plenty of teams, including the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles, will agree with Standig on his metaphore for Conerly.
Protecting Daniels is the top goal for Washington moving forward for the franchise. He will either make or break the organization's future and surrounding him with quality talent is incredibly important.
It's what makes Conerly such an important, but smart pick for the franchise.
