Former Oregon offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. realized a lifelong dream on Thursday as the Washington Commanders selected him No. 29 overall in the 2025 NFL draft.
The 21-year-old comes to Washington with plenty of hype, earning All-Big Ten and All-American honors last season for the Oregon Ducks. Conerly never missed a collegiate game and now steps into a situation where he'll be blocking for reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels.
“Man, it’s a God given opportunity, you know what I mean? I got to thank God first before anything," Conerly told the media on Thursday after Washington selected him. "And honestly, was I expecting it? Yeah, because I was ready to go [laughs]. But yeah, it's God-given opportunity, man.”
That's a genuine reaction.
So, what does Conerly think about blocking for a star like Daniels?
“It means the world to me, he said. "Heisman Trophy winner, somebody I look up to, just someone that went from Pac 12, went to SEC, did big things, and I'm looking forward to the opportunity just to get out there and block for one of the best.”
The good news for Conerly is that he won't immediately be protecting Daniels' blind side. General manager Adam Peters made it clear that Laremy Tunsil was acquired to play left tackle. And while Conerly only played left tackle at Oregon, the Commanders are confident he can either tackle spot or move inside to guard.
You can bet Daniels is smiling, too.
