The Washington Commanders spent free agency trying to get younger and faster on defense while not breaking the bank. GM Adam Peters did a pretty good job of that, but there is still more work to be done. With the 2026 NFL Draft less than a month away, teams are evaluating prospective draftees to determine who they will ultimately select.
The Commanders have the No. 7 overall pick, but they don't have a pick in the second or fourth rounds, which makes their round one and round three picks incredibly important. Analysts and insiders tend to vary on who they think the Commanders will select, and CBS Sports' Pete Prisco believes it will be Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love.
Prisco isn't the first one to suggest that the Commanders will select Love. ESPN's Field Yates predicted the same thing earlier this week.
Love is arguably the most talented player in this draft, and he will be a top-10 selection. Over his three seasons in South Bend, he carried the ball 433 times for 2,882 yards, an average of 6.7 yards per carry, and 36 touchdowns. He also caught 63 passes for 594 yards (an average of 9.4 yards per catch) and six additional touchdowns.
He is a versatile and athletic running back, and even with the signings of Racchad White and Jerome Ford, plus the extension of Jeremy McNichols, there is always room for talent. Should the Commanders go this route, there will be a massive competition among the three free agents to play behind Love and Jacory Croskey-Merritt.

They would consider edge Reuben Bain Jr. in this spot if he were there, but they signed guys in free agency. They opt for the star runner who can be their go-to guy in the run game.
