As the 2026 NFL Draft draws nearer, more and more mock drafts are popping up. One of the things we've noticed the most about the Washington Commanders is that NFL analysts and experts are unsure of which direction they'll go with the No. 7 overall pick. Some say defense, some say offense, and really, it could go a lot of ways.
CBS Sports draft analyst Ryan Wilson recently released a three-round mock draft, and he predicts the Commanders will select edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. out of Miami.
The additions of Oweh and Chaisson certainly do not rule out a defensive pick in the first round. However, they have a much more glaring need on the offensive side of the ball: Wide receiver. Without a second-round pick, Wilson predicts that the Commanders will handle that in the third round by drafting Clemson wide receiver Antonio Williams.
Williams might be a great receiver in the NFL, and it's possible he can contribute pretty quickly. But it's hard to believe that the Commanders will pass on a wide receiver like Carnell Tate, who was still available in Wilson's mock. Tate fits what the Commanders need more than Williams, and an edge rusher isn't so dire a need as to use their first-round pick on Bain.
If the Commanders go defense in the first round, it's likely to be Sonny Styles or a position in the secondary. But if they go offense, it's almost certainly Carnell Tate or Jeremiyah Love. But who knows? The Commanders are in an excellent position to land an impact player regardless of which side of the ball it's on.

Bain feels like a Dan Quinn edge rusher, and this is still a position of need -- even after the Commanders signed Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson.
