Midway through the second quarter of Sunday's game between the Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions, the Commanders lost one of their top defensive players. After the Lions scored to take a 20-3 lead, defensive tackle Daron Payne was ejected.

The television broadcast didn't initially say what Payne did to be ejected, but it was later revealed that Payne threw a punch at Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St-Brown after the touchdown.

After Payne was ejected, fellow starting defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, and the Lions elected to go for the 2-point conversion, which was successful, making it 22-3. Kinlaw made contact with an official and should have also been ejected.

Washington's defense continues its implosion. The Lions have had three drives in the first half, all resulting in touchdowns.

  • 10 plays, 78 yards, TD
  • 9 plays, 65 yards, TD
  • 9 plays, 82 yards, TD

In addition to Payne's ejection, the Commanders also saw linebacker Frankie Luvu and rookie cornerback Trey Amos go down with injuries. Luvu walked off the field under his own power and returned.
