The Detroit Lions defeated the Washington Commanders 44-22 on Sunday at Northwest Stadium. The game was really never competitive as Washington's abysmal defense allowed Detroit to score on its first eight possessions.
In the second quarter, Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs scored on a 13-yard run to give Detroit a 20-3 lead. A lot was going on during the play. Washington linebacker Frankie Luvu and cornerback Trey Amos were down with injuries. Then, veteran Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne was ejected from the game. Right after Payne's ejection, Javon Kinlaw got into it with Detroit players, making contact with an NFL official and drawing a 15-yard penalty.
Why was Payne ejected? Television cameras caught the replay of Payne throwing a punch at Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
After the game, Kinlaw spoke about Payne's ejection, defending him, saying that St. Brown threw the first punch.
What did St. Brown say about the much larger Payne throwing a punch at him?
“I mean, I think two plays before that, we got into a little scuffle, back and forth, whatever, this, that, and the other, and then we end up scoring, and I go up to him," St. Brown said. "I say a little something, nothing crazy, and then he decides to swing on me, so, I mean, it is what it is."
That's St. Brown's story. If what he says is true, Payne will likely be suspended for at least a game. Players can't lose their cool like Payne did in this situation. However, if Kinlaw's version is correct, St. Brown deserves punishment from the NFL, too.
What we do know is that several NFL fans were happy to see Payne swing at St. Brown, with many hoping he'd knock him out. St. Brown's trash-talking makes him an unpopular player with many.
