The Washington Commanders have found their Zach Ertz replacement, agreeing to terms on a three-year deal with Tennessee Titans tight end Chig Okonkwo, per Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network.
Okonkwo, 26, was a fourth-round pick of the Titans in the 2022 NFL Draft. In four seasons for Tennessee, Okonkwo caught 194 passes for 2,017 yards and eight touchdowns. Despite questionable quarterback play at times during his tenure with the Titans, Okonkwo was fairly consistent, finishing with 54, 52 and 56 receptions in each of the last three seasons, respectively
He played collegiately nearby at the University of Maryland.
Okonkwo will join tight ends Ben Sinnott, John Bates, Colson Yankoff and Lawrence Cager on the roster. Sinnott, a 2024 second-round pick, is expected to fill a jack-of-all-trades role for the Commanders under new offensive coordinator David Blough. Sinnott can play traditional in-line tight end, line up in the slot, or in the backfield. He was mostly used as a blocker under former OC Kliff Kingsbury.
Bates is one of the NFL's top blocking tight ends, while Yankoff is a special teams standout. Okonkwo's addition gives Washington a talented and versatile tight end room.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels should be thrilled with Okonkwo's addition. He can occupy the middle of the field, much like Ertz did, but he also offers more after the catch. Okonkwo is the first offensive player signed in free agency for Washington, but won't be the last.
