After a surprisingly quiet Day 2 in free agency, the Washington Commanders finally made a move, agreeing to terms with Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal on a three-year deal. The deal is worth $24.75 million, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
Chenal, 25, entered the NFL as a third-round pick of the Chiefs in the 2022 NFL Draft. Chenal appeared in 65 regular-season games across four seasons for the Chiefs, making 44 starts. He has 218 career tackles, including 17 for loss, 16 quarterback hits, seven sacks, six passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one interception.
Chenal recorded 58 tackles, two sacks and one interception in 2025 in 14 games. He went on injured reserve in December once the Chiefs were out of the playoff picture with a shoulder injury.
While it's currently unknown the type of front that Washington will use under new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones, there's a belief it will be a base 3-4 defense. Chenal would play inside for the Commanders, but he possesses the ability to come off the edge.
Per Pro Football Focus, Chenal earned a 75.1 grade in 2025, including 76.2 in run defense and 72.6 in coverage. Chenal received an 83.5 grade in 2024, scoring a 90.2 against the run and 75.0 in coverage.
