INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts didn’t take long to fill the spots left open by the free-agency departures of Nick Cross and Rodney Thomas II.

Indianapolis is signing experienced veteran safety Jonathan Owens and young Cowboys safety Juanyeh Thomas, sources told IndyStar on Friday, to compete for the starting job left open by Cross’ decision to sign with the Commanders.

Owens, who turns 31 in July, has spent seven seasons in the NFL with the Texans, Packers and Bears, playing a variety of roles. Owens was a starter at strong safety in his final season in Houston and his only year in Green Bay, but he played mostly special teams in Chicago in 2025.

Thomas, on the other hand, is a young safety coming off a difficult year in Dallas. While Thomas played a career-high 266 defensive snaps for the Cowboys in 2025, his season ended after just seven games due to nerve issues that caused debilitating migraines.
