Lindsey Vonn may have broken her lower leg in her crash in the Olympic downhill race on Sunday, United States speed team coach Alex Hödlmoser has said.

"We have little information but it is probably a fracture somewhere in her lower leg," Hödlmoser told Swiss broadcasters SRF.

However, Hödlmoser also said that the exact diagnosis was outstanding because examinations were continuing.

Vonn, 41, crashed early in her run on the Olimpia delle Tofane piste after clipping a gate. She held her knee and screamed in pain and was eventually taken to hospital by helicopter.

Vonn started the race although she said she tore the cruciate ligament in her left knee nine days ago, and competed with a brace.

She came out of retirement last season, with a partially titanium right knee and the aim to win another downhill gold 16 years after her first.

Vonn's crash shocked the fans and skiing community and even more her family, with her father, Alan Kildow, and her sister, Karin Kildow, present in the finish area.

“That’s definitely the last thing we wanted to see,” Karin Kildow told US broadcasters NBC. "When that happens, you’re just immediately hoping she’s okay, and it was scary. When you start to see the stretchers being put out, it’s not a good sign."

Kildow added the family also doesn't know any injury details.

The US ski team has so far only issued a short statement, saying on social media during the race: "Lindsey Vonn fell in the Olympic downhill and will be evaluated by medical staff."
