Clemson baseball secured a series win over Stanford on Sunday, but the victory came with a concerning injury to one of its most reliable players.
Tryston McCladdie was hit in the face by a pitch during the game and was forced to exit early. The Tigers’ utility man did not play in Monday’s 6-4 win over Santa Clara, although he remained with the team and was in uniform.
An update during the Clemson Athletic Network broadcast provided more clarity on the situation. McCladdie suffered multiple facial fractures as a result of the hit-by-pitch, but the injury will not require surgery. While that’s a positive development, there is still no official timeline for when he could return to the field.
His absence would be a significant one for Clemson’s lineup. McCladdie has been one of the most steady and productive hitters on the roster this season, posting a .339 batting average along with eight home runs and 35 RBIs. His power numbers rank among the best on the team, and he’s also made an impact with his speed, going 13-for-14 on stolen base attempts prior to the injury.
Beyond his production at the plate, McCladdie has also been valuable because of his versatility. He opened the season at third base before shifting to center field, and most recently moved to second base during the Stanford series. That flexibility has allowed Clemson to move pieces around, something that becomes even more important with injuries starting to pile up.
And McCladdie isn’t the only one the Tigers are missing. Collin Priest has yet to appear this season due to a hamstring injury, while Jarren Purify has been sidelined for the past two weeks after suffering a broken hand when he was hit by a pitch during the Notre Dame series.
With multiple players already out and no clear timeline for McCladdie’s return, Clemson will have to adjust quickly as it moves forward through the schedule.
