Clemson finally put together the kind of inning that can change the feel of a season.
After weeks of frustration and sitting at the bottom of the ACC standings, the Tigers came out swinging on Saturday and never looked back. An 11-run first inning powered Clemson to a 14-4 win over No. 13 Boston College in seven innings at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, evening the series.
The game was essentially decided before Boston College had a chance to settle in.
Clemson brought 16 hitters to the plate in the opening frame and collected eight hits, taking advantage of free passes and mistakes along the way. The Eagles issued three walks and hit two batters, which only added to the damage during the early surge.
The Tigers mixed in everything offensively. Tyler Lichtenberger and Bryce Clavon each dropped down squeeze bunts that turned into runs, while the lineup also delivered extra-base hits in bunches. Nate Savoie highlighted the inning with a three-run homer and later added a double, finishing with two runs scored. Luke Gaffney followed Savoie’s blast with a home run of his own, adding to the early cushion.
Several players chipped in during the rally. Jason Fultz Jr. and Lichtenberger each drove in two runs, while Tryston McCladdie, Jarren Purify and Clavon also contributed RBIs.
While the offense grabbed the spotlight, Michael Sharman handled things on the mound. The left-hander worked six innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three to improve to 6-1 this season.
Clemson, now 27-20 overall and 7-16 in conference play, will try to build off the performance in Sunday’s series finale, with first pitch set for noon.
