Clemsonbaseball’s offense broke the game open in a big way on Wednesday night, rolling past Michigan State 12-1 in a run-rule victory at Fluor Field in Greenville.
The Tigers piled up 13 hits and saw production throughout the lineup, with nearly every starter recording at least one hit. Jay Dillard led the charge with a 3-for-4 night and four RBIs, highlighted by the first home run of his college career. His two-run blast in the seventh inning traveled 408 feet and ended the game early.
Luke Gaffney, Tryston McCladdie and Jacob Jarrell also went deep for Clemson. Jarrell, McCladdie, Dillard and Ty Dalley each finished with multiple hits as the Tigers steadily built separation after the early innings.
Freshman Eston Simpson made his second start of the year and worked four innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three without issuing a walk. Michigan State’s lone run came on a sacrifice fly in the second inning, but Clemson quickly answered when Gaffney launched the first pitch of the bottom half over the wall in left-center to even the score.
The Tigers seized control in the fourth inning. Clemson sent 12 hitters to the plate and scored seven runs in the frame, most of them coming with two outs. Key hits from Dalley, Dillard and Jarren Purify helped push the Tigers in front for good.
Jarrell added a solo homer in the fifth and McCladdie followed with another in the sixth before Dillard’s seventh-inning blast finished it.
Clemson returns to Doug Kingsmore Stadium this weekend for a four-game series against LaSalle beginning Friday at 4 p.m.
