A man found dead early on May 28 in the warehouse of a furniture showroom in Lake Park is presumed to be former National Hockey League standout Claude Lemieux, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said.

The office reported the incident as a death by apparent suicide. It said a family member found the man's body shortly before 3:30 a.m. in the rear warehouse of the Andros Home furniture showroom on the 200 block of North Congress Avenue.

The NHL and the NHL Players Association confirmed Lemieux's death, releasing statements on their social-media pages.

Claude Lemieux won four Stanley Cups during 21 NHL seasons

Lemieux was 60 years old. He won four Stanley Cup titles over 21 seasons playing in the NHL, winning championships with the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche. He ended his career with 379 regular-season goals, 407 assists and 1,777 penalty minutes.

His most recent public appearance came on May 25, when he carried the torch into the Bell Centre on May 25 before Game 3 of Montreal's Eastern Conference final matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes. It is an honor the Canadiens give to their greatest living players.

“The National Hockey League mourns the passing of Claude Lemieux, a four-time Stanley Cup champion and one of the greatest big-game players in hockey history," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement.

"Lemieux forged his postseason reputation and won the Cup for the first time as a rookie in 1986, when he scored 10 goals in the playoffs for the Montreal Canadiens."

"He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as Playoffs MVP in 1995, scoring 13 goals in 20 postseason games with the New Jersey Devils. He also was an integral part of Cup-winning teams in Colorado, in 1996, and back with New Jersey in 2000."

Lemieux became an agent for NHL players after he retired in 2003.

Claude Lemieux had ties to Palm Beach Gardens, records show

USA TODAY Sports contacted the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's Office but has been notified that the information it has for Claude Lemieux is "exempt from public records." State law prohibits the public release of medical examiner records for death cases involving suicide.

According to a sheriff's office statement, the man presumed to be Lemieux was found after he failed to return to his home. Sheriff's investigators secured the business, just south of Northlake Boulevard, as detectives from PBSO's Violent Crimes Division gathered evidence.

Palm Beach County court records show that Lemieux lived in an apartment in Palm Beach Gardens as recently as April 2025. State business records list Lemieux as the registered agent for Andros Home, which incorporated in 2022.
