After weather forced postponement of Sunday’s game between the Joplin Jailbirds and the Clarinda A’s, the two teams met Monday for two games. The A's won the first game 16-11 and claimed a 6-4 extra-innings victory in the second.

Game 1

In Game 1, Joplin (7-6) was plagued with pitching woes, giving up seven runs in the second inning and falling despite a late offensive surge.

Clarinda got on the board in the top of the first when Sean Bazmore scored on a Theodore Anderson single.

The A’s added seven more runs on just three hits in the top of the second — all with two outs. Cole Baumgart drove in Gavin Harrington with an infield single, Cooper Knight and Bazmore scored on an Anderson single to right field to make it a 4-0 game. John Petrie was hit by a pitch, loading the bases before Andrew Young was hit by a pitch from his former Webb City teammate Cohen Epler, plating Baumgart and extending the A’s lead to 5-0.

Andy Gill was the third straight Clarinda batter hit by a pitch, scoring Anderson and making it a 6-0 game. The A’s final two runs of the inning came via a Harrington single to center that brought Young and Petrie across the plate.

Clarinda (9-1) tacked on another run in the top of the third when Baumgart scored on an Anderson single to right field to make it a 9-0 game.

The Jailbirds pared the A’s lead to 9-3 in the bottom of the third. Landin Midgett smacked a double down the right field line that scored Eric Williams Jr. Austin Marsh scored on a fielder’s choice, and Midgett advanced to third and scored on an error.

The A’s got two of those runs back in the top of the fifth inning. Bazmore scored on a Jailbirds error, and Baumgart plated Cooper Knight with a single to left to make it an 11-3 game.

Clarinda’s lead ballooned with three more runs in the top of the sixth. Gill cracked a two-run homer over the left field fence to plate Young and Bazmore later hit a solo shot to left to make it 14-3.

Joplin avoided the run rule when its bats exploded for four runs in the bottom of the frame. Jace Midgett hit a double to center that brought Drew Vonder Harr and Jose Gomez across the plate. Jace Midgett later scored on a Williams single, and Jordan Tucker scored on a bases-loaded walk of Landin Midgett to make it a 14-7 game.

Harrington gave the A’s a 16-7 lead when he drove in Young and Petrie with a single to left field in the top of the seventh.

In the bottom of the frame, Joplin’s Gomez scored on an error and Jace Midgett scored on a Brady Stull single to left. Cy Darnell later scored on a bases-loaded walk and Stull scored on a Landin Midgett sacrifice fly to center, but that is all Joplin could muster as it fell 16-11.

Jace Midgett went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs for the Jailbirds. Cy Darnell was 2 for 4 with a run.

Epler was tagged for the loss after giving up eight runs on four hits. He walked four and stuck out two in 1 2/3 innings.

Anderson drove in four runs after going 2 for 5 with a run for Clarinda. Harrington finished 2 for 3 with four RBIs and Bazmore was 3 for 4 with four runs and one RBI.

A’s starter Jack Ohler gave up three runs, two earned, on two hits. He struck out three and walked five in three innings of work.

Game 2

The Jailbirds gained the early lead in Game 2 with a run in the bottom of the second inning when Mason Williams scored on an Elijah Charlot sacrifice grounder to short.

The A’s gained their first lead of the game at 2-1 in the top of the fifth when Brayden Olsen hit a two-run blast to right that plated Young.

The Jailbirds leveled the game at 2 in the bottom of the frame, courtesy of a Jayce Walker sacrifice fly to center that scored Shadrach Salazar.

Joplin reclaimed the lead at 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth after Mason Williams drove in Landin Midgett with a single to left field. Williams stole second and then third, but he was left stranded after a Salazar strikeout.

Clarinda’s Young tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the inning when he scored on a throwing error after a dropped third strike.

The A’s took a 6-3 lead in the top of the eighth when Parker McNeal hit a two-out triple to right field with bases loaded, plating Anderson, Baumgart and Knight.

In the bottom of the inning, Cy Darnell scored on a wild pitch, but the Jailbirds were unable to put two more across to extend the game and fell 6-4.

Mason Williams went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run for the Jailbirds. Landin Midgett was 1 for 2 with a run.

Joplin starter Lucas Vanlanduit gave up two runs on three hits. He struck out six and walked none in five innings of work.

O’Neal finished 1 for 3 with three RBIs for the A’s. Olsen was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run.

Clarinda starter Clay Hedges gave up three runs, two earned, on one hit. He stuck out seven and walked two in 5 1/3 innings.

The Jailbirds return to action when they host the Nevada Griffons at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Joe Becker.
