PITTSBURG, Kan. — Carl Junction’s girls basketball team came up short in a 46-42 loss to the Webster Groves Statesmen at the Bill Hanson Memorial Tournament on Thursday at Pittsburg High School.

Webster Groves (5-4) earned an early 5-0 lead before Jadyn Howard got the Bulldogs (7-9) on the board with a score off an assist from Jaisie Hocutt.

The Statesmen responded with an Ann Lawless score in the paint to make it a 7-2 game midway through the opening quarter.

Carl Junction then went on a 9-0 run that started with a Nevaeh Triplett free throw. Audrey Besperat hit a corner 3-pointer to pull the Bulldogs within a point at 7-6 before the Statesmen made the error of leaving Dempsey Harris wide open at the top of the key. Dempsey buried the trey to give Carl Junction its first lead at 9-7. Hocutt extended the Carl Junction lead to 11-7 with a drive to the rim from the right side with 1:27 left.

Webster Groves stopped the bleeding with an Ava Vanecek putback, but Harris answered that score with another 3-pointer to put the Bulldogs up 14-9.

The Statesmen closed out the first period with a Hadley Nordmann trey to make it a 14-12 game.

Webster Groves had its most productive quarter in the second frame, netting 18 points while holding Carl Junction to 8 points.

Carl Junction opened the second quarter with a Triplett trey from the left side, but Webster Groves quickly responded with a 3-pointer from Lawless.

Lawless scored on a putback to tie the game at 17-17 with 5:58 left in the half, but Triplett was good from beyond the arc again to give the Bulldogs back the lead at 20-17.

The Statesmen later tied the game at 20 off a Kyndal Richardson steal and score and took a 22-20 lead, courtesy of a Lawless putback at the 3:30 mark.

The Bulldogs tied the game with a Harris short jumper, but Webster Groves went on an 8-0 run that included a pair of 3-pointers from Nordmann and a bucket from Richardson to close out the half with a 30-22 lead.

The Statesmen opened the second half on a 10-4 run to extend their lead to 14 at 40-26 with 1:20 left in the third period.

Triplett made it a 40-28 game with a rebound and spin move in the lane that pulled the Bulldogs within 12 points. Trailing 42-31 with about 5 1/2 minutes left, Carl Junction put together an 11-point run that started with a shake-and-bake to the rim by Triplett and was capped off by a Ravilyn Smith score off a Howard feed that tied the game at 42-42 with 1:56 left in the game.

Nordmann’s fourth 3-pointer of the game put Webster Groves up 45-42 with 36 seconds left, but Carl Junction was unable to extend the game through fouls as the clock ran down. A Vanecek free throw wrapped up scoring as Webster Groves held on for the 46-42 win.

Carl Junction head coach Marty Atnip talked about the near-comeback.

“We’ve been there a lot this year,” Atnip said. “We’ve sometimes done it to ourselves by digging a hole. But this team has a lot of grit and a lot of fight. We know we have the potential of coming back — the defense is there. In clutch moments, you have to make clutch plays. We’ve had numerous opportunities this year to make clutch plays. Sometimes we have, other times we haven’t.”

Triplett led Carl Junction with 14 points, and Harris finished with 10.

The tournament format was altered because of weather and wrapped up Friday with Carl Junction playing Hillcrest at 5 p.m. Results were not available at deadline.
