CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Carl Junction girls dominated in the paint Monday night en route to a 59-30 win over the Joplin Eagles at Carl Junction High School.
Carl Junction (7-6) earned its fourth straight win Monday, stopping a four-game win streak by the Eagles (6-6).
“We’re starting to gain more confidence and we kind of understand where we want to be and where we are going,” Carl Junction head coach Marty Atnip said. “This was just a good overall victory. We played all four quarters. We have been kind of inconsistent, but tonight was four quarters of really good basketball, and that’s good to see from a coach's standpoint.”
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead, courtesy of an Audrey Besperat score in the paint.
Joplin’s Solei Parker got the Eagles on the board at the 5:23 mark with a 3-pointer from the left side.
Carl Junction responded with another Besperat bucket in the paint, off a feed from Jadyn Howard. That score sparked a 9-0 run for the Bulldogs that was capped off by a Jaisie Hocutt score in the lane that gave Carl Junction a 15-3 lead with 11 seconds left in the opening quarter.
Parker broke a more than five-minute drought for the Eagles with a free throw as the first period ended with the Bulldogs up 15-4.
The Eagles looked ready to stage a comeback after starting the second quarter on a 9-0 run. Payton Cunningham scored down low, followed by a pair of Alissa Owens buckets and a Bella Munn trey from the top of the key that pulled Joplin within a score at 15-13 with 5:23 left in the half.
The Bulldogs regrouped and Carl Junction’s Nevaeh Triplett put a halt to the Eagles run with a trey from the left side to increase the Bulldogs lead to 18-13.
After a Howard putback for Carl Junction and a Cunningham score for Joplin, Carl Junction put together an 8-0 run that started with another Howard score and ended with a Dempsey Harris drive to the rim and a free throw that gave the Bulldogs a 28-15 lead with 2:57 left in the half.
The Eagles earned the last 6 points of the half off two Cunningham scores in the paint and a Parker free throw, and the teams went into the locker room with Carl Junction holding a 28-20 lead.
The Bulldog defense held Joplin scoreless in the third period and the offense scored 10 straight points in a run that began with a Besperat score and ended with three straight Howard scores in the paint that gave Carl Junction a 38-20 lead going into the final frame.
Joplin trimmed the Carl Junction lead to 12 in the first minute of the fourth quarter with an Owens jumper, a Parker steal and score and another Owens bucket at the 6:59 mark that made it a 38-26 game.
Harris responded with back-to-back 3-pointers for the Bulldogs. Carl Junction outscored the Eagles 16-4 down the stretch to secure the win.
“The last four games, she has really stepped up her game and has been in double digits every night,” Atnip said of Harris. “When you have a sophomore that is young and playing with a lot of confidence, the rest of the team feeds off that.”
Harris claimed game-high honors with 21 points. Howard netted 12, and Triplett finished with 10 points.
Besperat was a force inside the entire game, despite her 5-foot-7 frame.
“She boards hard and is just a gritty type of player,” Atnip said. “She’s just not going to let other people push her around. She’s one of those hard-nosed players that a coach loves. She does all the dirty work and doesn’t always get all the glory, and she is key to what we are doing.”
Cunningham and Owens both finished with 8 points for Joplin and Parker chipped in with 7.
Joplin head coach Brad Cox talked about the loss after the game.
“Credit to CJ, they did a lot of things well, but we also did a lot of things not super well,” Cox said. “Part of being a high school athlete is learning from these things. My message to the girls was we can either be a glass or a bouncing ball. If we drop a glass, it will shatter into 1,000 pieces, but a bouncing ball will bounce right back up.”
Carl Junction will host St. Mary's-Colgan on Friday.
Joplin travels to McDonald County on Thursday.
