Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach recently held a pre-draft press conference via Zoom. He addressed several questions heading into next week, including rebuild mode around quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“I like to think that each year presents a new challenge and when you have Pat (Mahomes), there’s that mindset that you always have a chance to go out there and compete for a championship and compete for a division title,” said Veach, “The tricky part is trying to maintain that standard, but also keep an eye on the future and knowing that Pat’s still going to be here for a long time. We always have to build this thing out and build through the offense and defensive line, and that’s where it starts.”

Mahomes surprised many with a video of himself returning to the field for throwing drills, a little over 100 days after his injury. He believes he can return before Week 1 after surgery to repair his ACL and LCL, which he had last December. Veach remains focused on adding weapons around Mahomes and protection on the offensive line.

“Every team has that blueprint that once you get the quarterback, you have to protect them and then on the defensive side, get after the other team’s quarterback,” said Veach, “There are some of those immediate short-term means that you want to fill. So, it’s just a counterbalance of trying to go out there and get what Pat needs now but also keep an eye on the future so we can maintain this run.”

The 2026 NFL Draft will take place in Pittsburgh this year, beginning on April 23rd.
