- Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid is standing by Rashee Rice
- In the wake of Rice's 30-day jail sentence, Reid said the team will catch him up on what he's missed upon his release
- Rice had a clean-up surgery on his knee one week before he was sentenced to jail for violating the terms of his probation stemming from his role in a 2024 high-speed accident
The Kansas City Chiefs are standing by embattled wide receiver Rashee Rice.
The NFL star, currently in a Dallas County jail after violating the terms of his probation stemming from his involvement in a 2024 high-speed, multi-vehicle accident, will miss the team’s OTA offseason workouts and the Chiefs’ mandatory minicamp — but coach Andy Reid said the team will catch him up on what he’s missed upon his return.
"We're aware of the situation, and we've talked to the league," Reid, 68, told reporters on Thursday, May 28. "There's been no talk about anything further [as far as possible punishment from the NFL]. We're moving forward. When he gets back, we've got to get him caught up and doing what he needs to do.”
Reid continued, "It's not an easy thing he's going through. Life lessons are important, but we're all given chances to learn. He's in that position now."
On Tuesday, May 19, Rice was ordered to serve 30 days in jail after he tested positive for THC, which violated the terms of his probation, according to court documents reviewed by PEOPLE. Rice is scheduled to be released on June 16.
The North Texas native, 26, has already missed half of the workouts — with three more days scheduled next week — and will be otherwise occupied for the minicamp from June 9 to 11.
Rice violated the terms of a plea agreement he made in July 2025 in which he received five years probation after he caused the March 30, 2024 accident, according to ESPN.
Rice — who was in a Lamborghini Urus — and an acquaintance in a Corvette were driving at speeds up to 120 mph in the left lane of North Central Expressway in Dallas when they “lost control and the Lamborghini traveled onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing a chain reaction collision involving four other vehicles,” police said at the time.

Two people were injured and treated at the scene and two others were transported to a local hospital.
Rice left the scene of the accident, but he later turned himself in to police.

One week before he was sentenced to jail, Rice underwent a cleanup surgery on his right knee, ESPN reported.
Expected to be sidelined for two months, Rice should be ready for training camp, Reid said Thursday.
