Travis Kelce is a future Hall of Famer and is coming off a season in which he was still pretty productive. On the other hand, there have been some pictures of him posted online recently that have given people who are in worse shape than him the bravery to say that he has a “dad bod.” It’s nice to know that this phrase is still being used with a straight face to describe the physiques of professional athletes so that it can remain muted.

Kelce, who had a big wedding this offseason, received some support from his longtime coach Any Reid on Wednesday. The Kansas City Chiefs coach told reporters that, to his eye, Kelce looks like he as all the other times he’s come into camp.

“He came back in good shape,” Reid said. “I know everybody’s out there saying he’s got the dad body and all this stuff, but he looks the same to me that he’s always looked, and just playing like crazy. So he’s doing a nice job with everything. He’s focused in and ready to go, and I appreciate that, when you have somebody who’s been here 14 years and wants to be out there every snap. . . he’s going to play and play hard and be aggressive and not be stopped, and that’s contagious.”

Look, Kelce is 36 years-old. Dad or not, by that age it gets a bit more difficult to maintain the same type of chiseled physique that would land a guy on a health magazine. Put younger: it’s tougher to muscle max without getting love handle mogged. But here’s the deal.

We have been over this so, so many times. Just because a professional athlete looks somewhat closer to a regular person than a Greek god in a still photo does not mean they are washed or bound for a lackluster season. It usually just means that the person sharing or commenting on the photo really needs engagement and hasn’t paid attention to all the other times we’ve done this song and dance.

So at the end of the day, Kelce’s football coach believes that the tight end will continue to play football at a high level and as the body to do so. There’s also a good month of conditioning work to be put in before any meaningful games happen. It’s all going to be okay.
