Kansas City Chiefs superstar tight end Travis Kelce got married last month to global pop sensation Taylor Swift at Madison Square Garden, but is already back with the Chiefs as training camp gets underway. Last season, the Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time in 11 seasons and just the second time in Kelce’s career.
Many people have called out Kelce for showing up to camp out of shape and sporting what they’ve called a “dad body,” but his head coach is coming to his star’s defense.
“He came back in good shape,” Andy Reid told NFL Network. “I mean, I know everybody’s out there saying he’s got the ‘dad body’ and all this stuff, but he looks the same to me that he’s always looked, so… and just playing like crazy. So he’s doing a nice job with everything. He’s focused in and ready to go.
“And I appreciate that when you have somebody that’s been here 14 years, that wants to be out there every snap, he’s wired like this guy right here [NFL Network analyst Steve Smith Sr.] where, you know, he’s gonna play and play hard and aggressive and not be stopped. I mean, that’s contagious.”
Although the Chiefs offense hasn’t looked the same in recent years, at its peak, Kelce’s connection with quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the engine that has led the duo to three Super Bowl Championships. He enters the year as the Chiefs’ all-time leader in career receptions with 1,080 and career receiving yards with 13,002.
As Kansas City gets ready for a campaign it hopes finishes with yet another Super Bowl ring, Reid had a funny quip about how Kelce has managed to stay in shape.
“He did a lot of dancing at his wedding,” Reid said with a smile on the first day of camp, per The Athletic’s Jesse Newell.
