Chatham Glenwood yet again carried the wrestling banner for the Springfield area.
Senior Cody Moss and sophomore Cooper Clarke each reached the championship round in Class 2A at the coveted boys individual wrestling state finals at the State Farm Center in Champaign on Saturday, Feb. 21.
Both wound up second place, the highest among the area’s wrestlers.

Moss (44-4) dropped his title defense against Antioch's Owen Shea (35-5) in the final round at 285 pounds, after falling behind 7-1 by the end of the first period.
Moss still remains the second wrestler in school history to win a state title, when he defeated East Peoria’s Jose Del Toro with a 9-7 decision in last year’s 285 final. He is also the sixth wrestler in program history to win at least two state medals.
He is a defensive line commit for the Western Illinois University football team.
"It's kind of sad, but I guess it was God's plan for me to get second,” Moss said. “I'll use this as fire to just keep pushing. I don't look at it as failure, I look at it as a testament of faith."
Glenwood sophomore Cooper Clarke (40-5) immediately took the mat afterward in the 106-pound title match and jumped ahead 3-0 in the first period. Except Freeport opponent Treyden Diduch rallied ahead with a near fall with just 10 seconds left in the second and subsequently smothered Clarke to bleed out the final two minutes.
Clarke went 1-2 in last year's state debut with older brother and now-alum Tyler.
"I didn't wrestle the best I should have,” Clarke said. “I have to just keep working ... I have to take this and learn from it. I'm not going to get any better sitting here pouting over it. So, I just have to get back to work."
Other 2A state medalists included Glenwood’s Jaxon Ferguson with sixth place at 120 pounds and Springfield High’s Bryce Bryant with fifth place at 157 pounds.
Petersburg PORTA/Havana senior Justin Zimmerman garnered his second straight and highest state medal with third place in Class 1A at 165 pounds. He was previously fifth at 157 pounds. He is the sixth wrestler in school history to reach the podium at least twice.
Other 1A state medalists included PORTA’s Coyt Rademaker with fifth place at 106 pounds; PORTA’s Zach Bryant with sixth place at 144 pounds; and Sacred Heart-Griffin's Casen Lyons with sixth place at 190 pounds.
