Another mid-season departure from the Hornets during the 2025-26 season was former Colorado guard KJ Simpson. Despite showing flashes of play-making ability at times for the Hornets last season, Charlotte decided to cut ties with Simpson after 14 appearances this year, making room to sign Tosan Evbuomwan on a two-way deal instead. This news was especially devastating for Simpson, considering he was dealing with a hip injury at the time. Despite being called up, Evbuomwan didn't log an NBA minute for the Hornets after playing in five games with the New York Knicks.
In Simpson's 14 games with Charlotte, his efficiency was slightly up while his counting stats were down, averaging eight less minutes per game. However, Simpson's shooting numbers still weren't great, converting on just 34.8% of field goals and 30.8% of 3-pointers. In total, Simpson averaged six points, 2.5 assists, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.1 steals in 15.9 minutes of play. Following his departure from Charlotte, Denver scooped him up on a two-year, two-way contract, giving him another chance with the Nuggets next season.
