The Boston Bruins became much too familiar with Buffalo Sabres 20-year-old forward Zach Benson in the six-game playoff series.
Benson plays a role for his Sabres that is affectionately referred to by hockey fans as "the rat." He lived up to his role in the final seconds of the Bruins Game 6 loss when Benson inexplicably decided to slew-foot Bruins captain Charlie McAvoy in the final seconds of the loss.
Slew footing is the dirtiest play in hockey. It refers to a skater taking out the legs of another skater from behind.
McAvoy retaliated to the game's dirtiest play with a hefty two-handed slash. In the end, it was McAvoy who served a penalty and received a game misconduct.
The NHL has now officially offered McAvoy an opportunity to plead his case in person.
"Boston’s Charlie McAvoy has been offered an in-person hearing for slashing Buffalo’s Zach Benson. Date and time TBD," the NHL Department of Player Safety posted on X.
We are still waiting for the Department of Player Safety to post an announcement calling on Benson to explain the play in which he grabbed McAvoy's right leg with his left arm and pulled his skates out from under him.
