Officiating has been a huge issue in the 2025 NBA playoffs so far, with fans of each team often complaining about potentially missed calls and questionable decisions.

More recently, there was even a debate when a turnover on Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards was reversed to a foul on Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James following a challenge, which cost L.A. a chance for a comeback and eventually the game.

However, the most controversial officiating issue so far has been the no-call toward the end of Game 4 between the New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons. With the clock down to its final few seconds and New York just one point ahead, Tim Hardaway Jr. baited Josh Hart to commit a foul with a pump fake.

Despite Hart clearly hitting Hardaway, no foul was called, and the Knicks proceeded to hold on to their lead for the 94-93 victory.

Making matters worse, the officials admitted to missing the obvious foul call. So, instead of the series being tied at 2-2, the Knicks went up 3-1.

Amid the controversy, NBA legend Charles Barkley talked about the missed call in the Knicks-Pistons game during Monday's "Inside the NBA" broadcast.

Not only was Chuck critical of the missed call, but he also shared how an NBA official sent him a text about how bad it was.

"I heard other idiots and fools on television say, 'Well, they missed other calls throughout the game,' Barkley stated. "Yeah, they did, they missed one that would've changed the entire series."

"A text I got from an NBA official said, 'They can't miss that call, the official was in the wrong place. And he said, quote, 'That was bad, and they gonna get susp–something's gonna happen…behind closed doors."

It remains to be seen how the NBA will address the officiating issues. Sure enough, however, there will be plenty of eyes on the referees as the NBA playoffs intensify.

While human error is part of the game, the fact of the matter is each call can make or break a matchup—and a series—just like what happened in the Knicks-Pistons clash.
