For Chargers fans hoping for a big win over a divisional rival in Week 18, you should temper your expectations.
That's because Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters on Monday that he intends to sit starting quarterback Justin Herbert during this season's regular-season finale against the Denver Broncos. The move comes with the Broncos having clinched the AFC West and the Chargers having locked up a Wild Card bid to the playoffs.
Herbert has passed for 3,727 yards and 26 touchdowns this season for the Chargers. The sixth-year signal caller and former first-round NFL draft selection has now led the Chargers to a postseason spot three times during his career. But with the most critical games yet to be played and Week 18's outcome meaning little to the Chargers, Harbaugh will prioritize his quarterback's health and give his reserves some experience.
In Herbert's absence, the Chargers will start fifth-year quarterback Trey Lance, who was also a first-round NFL draft pick (just one year after Herbert). Lance is in his first year with the Chargers after spending stints with the Cowboys and 49ers. He has made 12 career appearances and five starts in the NFL, with a 2-3 record as a starter. This weekend will mark his first start for the Chargers.
