Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was a notable absentee at voluntary offseason workouts on Tuesday.
Herbert hasn’t been at either of the voluntary practices open to the media for Phase 2 of the team's offseason program.
Additionally, wide receiver Ladd McConkey wasn't on the field for today’s voluntary practice open to the media.
Under the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement, these spring sessions are completely optional. However, Herbert's absence has had fans scratching their heads amid the arrival of new coordinator Mike McDaniel and his offense, along with new members of the offensive line.
While fans often worry when key players skip these sessions, it often doesn't affect their regular-season performance.
On the bright side, his absence opens up valuable first-team repetitions for backup quarterback Trey Lance to build chemistry with the starting wide receivers. Expect Herbert back on the field when mandatory team minicamps begin this June.
