With linebacker Denzel Perryman's appeal of his two-game suspension still pending, the Los Angeles Chargers (11-4) have made a few roster moves to account for the NFL's ruling ahead of their upcoming critical Dec. 27 game against the red-hot Houston Texans (10-5).
On Tuesday, Dec. 23, the Bolts announced they have signed running back Jaret Patterson to the 53-man active roster and signed running back Royce Freeman to the team's practice squad.
Patterson has played four games this season for the Chargers, running 32 times for 129 yards and a touchdown. In the short stint with the Bolts this year, where he helped fill the void of the injury-plagued backfield, the Glendale, Md., native had his best performance in his final game on Nov. 30 against the Las Vegas Raiders. In that game, he ran for 54 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.
As running back Kimani Vidal remains listed as "day-to-day" by the team's medical staff following a neck injury suffered early in the Bolts' Dec. 21 win at Dallas, Petterson will be in line to claim Vidal's spot in the depth chart if the second-year 2024 sixth-round pick is unable to play on Saturday against Houston.
As for Freeman, the seventh-year NFL journeyman who has appeared in 79 career regular-season games (nine starts) for the Broncos, Panthers, Texans, and Rams, will take the open spot on the practice squad left by the elevation of Patterson.
The Chargers-Texans matchup is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. PT start with the game broadcast on the NFL Network.
