Chargers fans will love GMs quote on Derwin James' future originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Los Angeles Chargers have had a fine offseason, but fans think it could have been so much better, as the franchise is currently sitting on $45 million in cap space.
That is more than enough to get two or three players for Jim Harbaugh.
But it also could be earmarked for players who have an upcoming contract due, which leads us to star safety Derwin James.
In the final year of his contract, James will be looking for one last bite at the apple, but how high is the urgency for the Chargers to keep Derwin around? Well, general manager Joe Hortiz just made it known.
"It's high. It's high," Hortiz said on the Up & Adams Show. "He's such a special, special leader and person. Like Justin [Herbert], the talent is real and it's there, but the leader and motivator and energy he gives to everybody within the organization, throughout the entire building, it's so unique. One of the best I've ever been around in terms of leadership, talent and character."

Chargers facing defining 2026 season
Back-to-back 11-win seasons under Harbaugh have the Chargers primed for a deep playoff run in 2026.
The offseason has seen some shrewd signings, and with Mike McDaniel coming in as offensive coordinator, there is real hope that Herbert and L.A. can finally mount a serious challenge for the Super Bowl.
Granted, we've heard that before, but there has to come a time when the Chargers actually deliver on their potential, right?
They have the quarterback, the head coach, and the defense; now it's all got to come together.
But will it?
