Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz made it clear about the importance of retaining safety Derwin James. Speaking on the Up & Adams show, Hortiz emphasized that keeping James, who is entering the final year of his current contract, in powder blue long-term sits at the very top of the organization’s agenda.

“It’s high. It’s high,” Hortiz said when asked about extension talks with James. Hortiz revealed that during his time with the Ravens, James was the top player on the Ravens' 2018 draft board. “I said to him when I first met him, ‘Gosh, you should’ve been a Raven… but I’m glad you’re not because I’m here now.’”

Hortiz heaped praise on James, comparing his impact to quarterback Justin Herbert. “He’s such a special, special leader and person,” Hortiz said. “The talent is real… but the leader and motivator and energy he gives to everybody within the organization, throughout the entire building, it’s so unique. One of the best I’ve ever been around in terms of leadership, talent and character.”

James has been the heartbeat of the Chargers’ defense since being drafted in the first round out of Florida State. As the ultimate chess piece capable of lining up anywhere on the field, James has compiled 589 combined tackles, 19.0 sacks, 11 interceptions, and 7 forced fumbles since entering the NFL in 2018.
