As Schefter notes, this makes James the highest-paid safety in the league, the second time he’s earned that distinction.

“Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh said last season that Derwin James is ‘the best safety I’ve ever seen in the history of the National Football League,'” Schefter said.

“And now the Chargers are once again paying him like the best safety in football.”

Chargers want to hold onto Derwin James for the long haul

Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz recently said he wanted to make the five-time Pro Bowler a Charger for life.

“He’s such a special, special leader and person,” Hortiz said. “And like Justin [Herbert], the talent is real, it’s there but the leader and motivator and energy he gives to everybody in the organization throughout the entire building is just so unique. [James is] one of the best I’ve ever been around in terms of leadership, character and talent.”
