North Decatur used a pair of 4-run innings to knock off No. 8 Knightstown 8-4 to win the sectional championship at Morristown. The Chargers advance to the regional Saturday to face MHC foe No. 11 Hauser.
North and the Jets square off at 11 a.m. at the Jennings County Regional.
After a scoreless first inning, North grabbed a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Henry Kinker and Eli Trenkamp both drew a walk to open things in the inning. Kipton Ruf sent a double to left field to score Kinker.
With two outs, Tyler Dean was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wyatt Reisman singled to bring in Eli Trenkamp. Matthew Fields followed with a double to center field to drive in Ruf and Dean.
Knightstown got a run in the third inning on a passed ball.
The Panthers tied the game at 4-4 with three runs on three singles and two walks in the top of the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Chargers took the lead for good with four runs. Reisman drew a walk and pinch runner Hayden Koehne was forced to second with a walk to Fields. With one out, Kinker singled up the middle to drive in Koehne and give the Chargers a 5-4 lead.
Trenkamp followed with a double to center field to bring in Fields and Kinker. Corbin Thackery singled to move Trenkamp to third base. Trenkamp came in to score on a wild pitch to extend the lead and final score to 8-4.
Knightstown threatened in the top of the sixth with back-to-back singles to start the inning. Two fly outs and a ground out got the Chargers out of the inning.
In the top of the seventh, a lead-off walk was all for the Panthers as the Chargers closed out the sectional title.
Fields picked up the win on the mound for the Chargers. Fields pitched 5.0 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits and six walks while striking out eight. Reisman pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing two hits and a walk.
Fields and Trenkamp both had two RBIs. Reisman, Kinker and Ruf all added one RBI.
North (15-8) and Hauser (18-4) split the two regular season meetings. The Chargers won at home 10-9 April 16 and the Jets posted a home win 7-1 April 17.
