Chad Tracy has improved the Red Sox, but his future in Boston is still unclear originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox have now had their interim manager Chad Tracy for a little over a month, and during that time they’ve gone 17-21. While it is much better than their 10-17 start under Alex Cora, Tracy’s leadership calls still raise some questions.
With this in mind, it seems like he may not be their permanent solution after this season.

While starting pitcher Brayan Bello has had an overall horrible 2026 season, his time with Tracy was especially chaotic. He would open games and get demolished, or be put behind an opener and do amazing.
He had a horrible outing yesterday, which led to him finally getting demoted to AAA Worcester. However, before the game, Tracy said in an interview that for the Red Sox to be successful, Bello needed to be a traditional starter, and that was proven to be wrong.
He also said that he doesn’t really know why Bello is doing so badly this season, and he doesn’t know if a stint in the minors will help him.

Boston’s offense was an overall bottom three force in the MLB before the coaching switch, but it has taken a turn for the better, to Tracy’s credit.
Guys who were hitting abysmally under Cora are now some of the hottest hitters on the team, such as All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran and NL ROTY finalist Caleb Durbin.
While the offense isn’t scoring as many runs as they were under Cora, they are consistently scoring a few, and are hitting the ball much better.
Replacements are possible

If the Red Sox don’t want to move forward with Tracy after this season, they have options to pick from at the big league level. Skippers like Milwaukee Brewers’ Pat Murphy and Toronto Blue Jays’ John Schneider will be done with their contracts, as well as a couple other managers as well.
The Red Sox could also try to pry someone from NCAA baseball, like the San Francisco Giants did with Tony Vitello.
Finally, they could just stick with Tracy, especially if they somehow make the playoffs. If that final option comes to pass, hopefully Tracy figures out how to manage this roster efficiently.
