Chad Tracy Discusses Decision To Send Runner In 9th Inning originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox were swept by the Minnesota Twins at Fenway Park as Boston had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday.
Wth runners on the corners and one out and the Red Sox trailing by two runs, Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a double off the wall, which was reviewed for a home run. Yet, after Nick Sogard scored, Connor Wong was sent home and was easily thrown out for the second out of the inning.
Although Wong was thrown out with ease, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy understood the decision to send him.
“Soaking wet, raining, balls wet and then it’s going to skip on the throw,” Tracy said postgame on Sunday. ““I definitely understand the sentiment. It’s not easy to throw balls [in these conditions]. … I totally get it, being aggressive there with one out, trying to get the game tied.”
Kiner-Falefa, however, felt like he hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth, so just missing out on the homer was tough.
“I thought it was going to be a lot closer,” said Kiner-Falefa. “I thought I got it, honestly.”
Ultimately, Boston lost 6-5 and fell to 22-30 on the season. Following the sweep at the hands of the Twins, Boston will host the Atlanta Braves for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday.
