The Boston Red Sox made some changes to their bullpen ahead of the first game of a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins at Fenway Park.

Boston called up reliever Tyron Guerrero and optioned righty Zack Kelly to Triple-A. After making the move, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said it was a chance for Guerrero to make an impact in the MLB, while Kelly, who’s pitched scoreless outings in 10 of his 12 games, was just part of a numbers game.

“Tyron deserves it. Zack probably didn’t,” Tracy said pregame on Friday, “but there’s part of it that stinks and it’s the life of a reliever with options. Guys have to go up and down sometimes. But he (Kelly) will be back.”

Guerrero has been stellar in Triple-A as he’s 0-0 with a 0.92 ERA in 19.2 innings, and Tracy is excited to see him pitch in the big leagues again.

“He throws really hard. That’s something to like,” Tracy said. “He just attacks and the velocity, believe it or not, was climbing over the last couple weeks. So a hard-thrower, big stuff that can get both handedness out and he’s deserved an opportunity to be here.”

Guerrero will get plenty of chances to continue the success he’s had since spring training.

Boston signed the right-hander to a minor-league contract in January. He’s appeared in 112 games in the MLB in his career, last pitching in the bigs in 2019 with the Miami Marlins.
