Celtics trading Jaylen Brown to Nuggets isn’t as simple as it might sound for one tough reason originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The idea of the Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets making a blockbuster move for Jamal Murray and Jaylen Brown seems like it could fix some of the problems we've seen the two teams deal with over the past year or so.

If anything, this is a deal that would more so benefit the Nuggets, as Brown is undoubtedly a better player than Murray, who, in his own right, is still a really good player. However, while the idea of making this move would be very exciting for the Nuggets and could even excite some Celtics fans, it isn't as easy as it might sound.

The reason is the salary differences, which a CBS reporter recently laid out.

“The Nuggets and Celtics are in somewhat similar positions as former champions who might need a shakeup. That has made a Brown-for-Jamal Murray trade a common rumor. I just want to lay out how complicated such a trade would be in reality.

“Brown is on a 35% max contract. Murray is on a 30% max contract. If they were traded one-for-one, the Nuggets, by virtue of taking in more money than they sent out, would be hard-capped at the first apron. That's untenable since they're essentially at the second apron as is. So Denver would have to aggregate salaries, creating a second apron hard cap instead,” Sam Quinn wrote.

The first and second apron situations make these things a lot more confusing than they typically seem.

The Nuggets, Celtics, and other contending teams around the NBA typically want to give themselves as much flexibility as they need to continue making moves to compete at the highest level. Not that these moves would necessarily hard-cap them into doing anything, but it would certainly confuse some things for both sides.
