If the Celtics are going to trade for Trey Murphy III, they'll have to include Jaylen Brown in the deal, right?
Maybe not.
Numerous rumors indicate Boston is interested in acquiring the New Orleans Pelicans forward, with Brown a presumed piece of the deal. However, the Celtics might try to land Murphy by trading different assets, according to The Athletic NBA insider Jay King.
"There have been whispers around the league of Boston’s interest in ... Trey Murphy III," King wrote in a piece published Wednesday. "There is even some belief that the Celtics ... would consider offers based more on younger prospects, picks and pick swaps."
A first-round pick in 2021, Murphy averaged 15.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists over the last five seasons in New Orleans. He's coming off a career-best season, averaging 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists while shooting 38% from 3-point range. Murphy turned 26 years old last week.
Ultimately, it's hard to envision the Celtics rostering Murphy and Brown next season. One way or another, it seems like Brown's days in Boston are numbered.
