The Boston Celtics are off to a flying start at NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, improving to 2-0 on Sunday.
The star of this win over the Charlotte Hornets? Dillon Mitchell.
The Celtics chose Mitchell with the No. 40 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft out of St. John's (after previous college stops at Texas and Cincinnati).
Mitchell was a top-five recruit in the country in the Class of 2022 who never reached his full potential in college.
He looked like someone who could impact games in a variety of ways in the NBA, but his scoring was a big question.
In his final season with the Johnnies, Mitchell scored 8.3 points per game and shot 6.7% from 3-point range (not a typo).
At least on Sunday, though, Mitchell showed both the all-around game and an ability to score and shoot.

This was Mitchell's final line against Charlotte:
- 24 points
- 8 rebounds
- 2 assists (2 turnovers)
- 6 steals
- 2 blocks
- 10-20 FG
- 2-5 3FG
- 1-3 FT
Amazingly, seven of Mitchell's eight rebounds were offensive.
The hustle on the glass, as well as the defensive stats, were the parts of Mitchell's game that the Celtics knew they could have some confidence in.
A 2-for-5 shooting game from 3? That's something Mitchell wouldn't have come close to at St. John's.
It's just one game, a small sample size, and doesn't prove his shot is fixed.
It does show he wants to work on it, though, and that's part of the battle.
This is a highly encouraging night at the office from Mitchell.
